Sound Techniques

Are you ready to get iconic?

The signature sound of the Sound Techniques console, modeled at component level.

You know the sound: crisp, detailed highs. Punch that pops tracks out of the speakers. A warm, huge low end. It was the essence of iconic recordings made in the late 1960s and early 70s. It was the signature sound of the Sound Techniques recording console.

The Sound Techniques A-Range* was the desk of choice in major studios in England, such as Trident and De Lane Lea, and was the first British recording console ever in the United States, in Sunset Sound’s fabled Studio 2. The biggest artists of this era were cutting their songs on a Sound Techniques, and were willing to fly the Atlantic to do so.

Late 1964 Geoff Frost and John Wood found Sound Techniques studio in Chelsea, London.
1965 The first A-Range console is built and installed in their own Chelsea studio.
1965–71 Fourteen A-Range consoles hand-built in total.
April 1967 The first A-Range is sold to Sunset Sound Recorders, Hollywood — the first British-designed mixing desk sold in the U.S.
1968 The second U.S. A-Range goes to Elektra Sound Recorders, West Hollywood.
1968 Trident Studios, London installs the first of two Sound Techniques consoles.
Late 1960s System 12 is introduced, often cited as one of the first compact mixing consoles ever built; roughly 40 units made.
1970 A System 12 is installed at Randy’s Studio 17 in Kingston, Jamaica.
1973 A System 12 bought by the Rolling Stones is operating at Dynamic Sound Studios, Kingston.
1974 Sound Techniques loses the lease on the Chelsea building housing both the studio and console manufacturing; the business effectively ends there.

Now it’s 2026

By 1976, Sound Techniques closed up shop and the brand vanished, forgotten by most of the industry. In 2018, Sound Techniques returned, making new, amazing sounding consoles and hardware. And you’ve heard these recordings as well, with that same signature openness and power.

In 2026, we’re delighted to introduce our Sound Techniques Alpha Range Channel strip. It’s the sound of those iconic studios and records, digitally modeled at component level, and now it’s in your DAW.

2014–16 Danny White purchases the Sound Techniques name and restarts the brand.
2018 The first new Sound Techniques consoles ship under White’s revived company.
2025 Danny White connects with Korneff Audio.
2026 Korneff Audio releases the Sound Techniques Alpha Range plug-in, a channel strip based on the original console. Warm Audio releases the Jude Preamp, a hardware version of the original.

The Sound Techniques Preamp

A one-of-a-kind design for a signature sound.

Sound Techniques preamp panel controls

The unique design of the Sound Technique preamp gives the Alpha Range strip saturation characteristics that impart size, warmth and sparkle to any sound source. A few clicks on the Mic Gain Preamp are a great start, but you can fine tune the transformers and amplifiers to tailor response to your mix.

01 Polarity Switch Flips absolute phase at the input stage.
02 Mic / Line Switch Selects the input stage feeding the transformer.
03 Input Transformer Impedance Loads the transformer differently for tone.
04 Mic Preamp Gain Drives the amplifier stage into saturation.

The Sound Techniques EQ

Unconventional, useful and gorgeous.

Sound Techniques EQ panel controls

The Alpha Range EQ is two bands of inductor-based equalization. It’s simple, but there’s a reason everyone wanted to mix on a Sound Techniques.

The high band features sweepable frequencies and a boost and a cut at the same time—it’s a high end “Pultec Trick” that adds air while controlling harshness.

The low end is designed for big bottom end, low mid warmth, and reduced muddiness.

We’ve included a set of high and low pass filters as well.

Sound Techniques EQ plugin interface
05 High Frequency Cut Tames harshness in the high band.
06 High Frequency Selection Sweepable frequency choice for the high band.
07 Bandwidth Selector Sets the width of the high band curve — wide, medium or narrow.
08 High Frequency Boost Adds air on top, usable alongside the cut.
09 Pass Filters High and low pass filters for both bands.
10 EQ Editor Opens real time analyser and editor.
11 Low Frequency Selection Switches the low band between 80 and 150 Hz.
12 Low Boost/Cut Big bottom end, low mid warmth, less mud.

A Killer Compressor

Modern features hidden in a vintage interface.

ElektraComp channel controls

The original Sound Techniques consoles had quirky interfaces. We wanted to maintain the look of the original Sound Techniques channels but add some of the features we know modern DAW workflows demand. So we added a compressor.

The ElektraComp is a vintage VCA-based design providing plenty of punch. Easy mode has just two knobs, a Threshold and a Blend (all set for parallel processing). Switch off Easy, and you get access to all the parameters, and a useful display to guide your choices.

ElektraComp plugin interface
13 Compressor Threshold Sets where the ElektraComp starts working — one of the only two knobs you need in Easy mode.
14 Compressor Blend Mixes compressed and uncompressed signal, preset for parallel processing.
15 Compressor Editor Opens compressor visualizer and additional controls.
16 Channel Fader Sets the channel output level feeding the bus.
17 Compressor In/Out Bypasses the compressor so you can A/B against the dry channel.
18 Channel Link Ties channels together for matched stereo compression.
19 Channel Cut Mutes the channel without disturbing your fader position.

Summing and Saturation

Customize the sound of the console.

A summing bus emulation gives the Alpha Range Channel the full sonic breadth of the console. Comprehensive back panel controls allow for unlimited tweaking of all the amplifier circuits in the channel and resource management.

Alpha Range summing bus and output section, controls numbered 20 to 25
20 VU Meters Analog-style ballistics show level and gain reduction.
21 Meter Display Switches the meters between output level and compressor gain reduction.
22 Output Faders Set the level into the summing amp stage.
23 Summing Amps Switches the summing bus emulation in, or bypasses it.
24 L / R Swap Flips the left and right channels at the output.
25 Fader Link Ties the two output faders together so they move as one.
