Chamber One has stories to tell

In 1968, a fourteen-year-old Paul Camarata was at his father's recording studio — Sunset Sound, on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. The door to the studio's reverb chamber was from an industrial meat locker, and it was open as Paul walked by.

Sitting on a stool inside, playing acoustic guitar and singing, was a lithe blond woman in her mid-twenties. Paul smiled and said, "I like your voice." She stopped, looked at him, and said, "Get lost, kid. I'm busy." It was Joni Mitchell.

Sunset Sound is Magical

Sunset Sound Recorders was founded in 1960 by Tutti Camarata at 6650 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. It became a destination for decades of musical innovation. The Doors. The Beach Boys. The Rolling Stones. Led Zeppelin. Van Halen. Prince. Guns N' Roses. Sheryl Crow. Rage Against the Machine. Maroon 5. Arctic Monkeys.

You've heard Sunset Sound Chamber One. It's iconic.

It's small — fifteen feet long, five feet wide, five feet tall. At the far end is an Altec Lansing A7 Voice of the Theatre speaker. By the meat locker door is a pair of RCA 44bx ribbon microphones to pick up the sweet sound of the room. The mics are wired to the walls and ceiling of the chamber in case the mic stands get bumped or there's an earthquake. Can't have those mics hitting the floor!

In November 2025, the guys at Korneff Audio multisampled Chamber One using eight different vintage microphones and three preamps, including a one-of-a-kind Sound Techniques A-Range® — possibly the rarest microphone preamp in the world. Extraordinary accuracy mixed with creativity, capturing the magic of Chamber One as it was in 1968, but not stuck in the past. Our Chamber One takes it into the future. Come along for the magic carpet ride.

A-Range® is a registered trademark owned by PMI Audio Group.
